Women’s only Group Fitness at Dandenong Oasis

Dandenong Oasis offers a women’s only group fitness program.  The program has been highly successful since its introduction by the YMCA in October 2008.

The program is suitable for senior and elderly women to participate in recreational swimming.  Dandenong and its surrounding suburbs has a culturally and linguistically diverse community, and the YMCA recognised a strong need to provide health and fitness opportunities for women who, for cultural or religious reasons, are unable to participate in exercise with men.

Two group classes are offered, with a circuit class and a water aerobics class in the hydrotherapy pool.

Lifeball

Lifeball is a ball game that involves walking, thinking, passing and throwing a ball with the aim of scoring a goal through a hoop.  It has been operating for over 10 years and is growing in popularity not only in Victoria but throughout Australia.

Lifeball is adaptable to suit the specific participants playing the game and has strict guidelines for fall prevention.  A key feature of Lifeball is that it is played with strategy and requires a lot of thinking rather than physical skills.

Surveys from participants of Lifeball have shown that through participation in the game they have improved fitness, coordination, balance and flexibility.

Heart Foundation Walking

Heart Foundation Walking is a network of free community-based walking groups with volunteer Walk Organisers that lead groups in your local area.

The Heart Foundation is setting up walking groups all across Australia in partnership with local communities. Area Coordinators, who may be from health or community centres, councils or workplaces, work with the Heart Foundation to assist volunteer Walk Organisers to recruit walkers and establish groups in their communities.

The Walk Organisers then lead groups in their local area. They are provided with resources, training and support to begin and maintain their group. They also receive complimentary merchandise as a ‘thank you’ for their role in organising a local walking group.

If you get involved with Heart Foundation Walking you will be provided with information outlining the initiative and you can choose to join the Walker Recognition Scheme which includes certificates and other incentives when you reach walking milestones (e.g. 25 walks).

Walking as part of a group helps you stay motivated, is safer and makes it much more fun too.

To find out where your nearest group is, start a new group, or join Heart Foundation Walking as a volunteer Walk Organiser, visit the Heart Foundation website
